48th Annual Pope County Deer Festival – November 20–22 2008

The Golconda Rotary Club will be announcing plans for the 48th Annual Pope County Deer Festival to be held in Golconda November 20th through 22nd.

All the activities mentioned will take place under the big entertainment tent on the courthouse lawn.

Spanning the entire block in front of the historic Pope County Courthouse will be the exhibition tent where craft vendors, hunting supplies, clothing, and many other useful items will be on display. Anchoring the massive tent, will be the Golconda Rotary Club Bar-B-Que stand. located in the west end. Just outside the Bar-B-Que stand and outside the huge tent will be the pits, fired by the Crim family, where the delicious pork shoulders will slowly roast over hot coals of fire.

Town will begin to fill up early Saturday for the presentation of the Street Parade. Beginning at 12:30 p.m. The annual Deer Festival Parade will make way from the Ohio River on the east, down Main Street to the west. Local bands, church and civic groups, businesses and politicians will ride in floats and vehicles of various sizes and kinds. The Deer Festival Parade is one of the largest parades in Southern Illinois and attracts thousands of visitors who line the street.

Pope County has, since being declared so in 1977, been the Deer Capital of Illinois, the reason for the annual Festival.

The Golconda Rotary Club and the businesses in Golconda and Pope County extend a cordial invitation to all to attend this, the 48th Annual Pope County Deer Festival.
